Cell tower replaced by blimps

Blimps: The New Cell Towers?

In just a few years, cell towers have become an ubiquitous part of almost every skyline and panorama. Well new technologies are being developed and tested that could replace 20-30 cellular towers with a single technology, laden, tethered airborne platform: blimps.

Boston-based Altaeros Energies is has successfully demonstrated their aerostat aerial platforms and is expected to have commercial deployments in as early as 2019

Possible benefits of this technology include:

  • Cuts energy cost by up to 50%
  • Reduces operations and maintenance overhead
  • Cuts cellular site acquisition costs

According to Altaeros Energies’ CEO/CTO, Ben Glass “The ultimate goal of the blimp is to provide affordable cellular service in very rural areas.”
